Tips for going through customs

Know what’s waiting for you on the Australian side. The Australian customs is really strict. That your time going through customs in the Netherlands. With a bit of bad luck, there are really long queues because they started checking everything extra. If this is your first time going on a big trip, take your time, you don’t want to go into the plane all stressed.

Things you’re really NOT allowed to bring into the country:

Vegetables, fruits, cookies, meat, bread, candy, nuts, seeds, other food, soil/sand (stuck to tentpoles).

What else you’re not allowed to bring? Check the list of the Australian customs here!

On the plane, they’re going to ask if you have anything to declare. If you have any of the above say ‘yes’. Customs won’t make a big deal out of it but they don’t want you hiding anything.

Smuggling goods into the country is a felony and you could be looking at jail time/a huge fine if you do so. You can avoid all this by leaving your stuff on the plane or just say yes when the steward asks if you have anything to declare. The fine/jail time is only for people who lie about the goods they brought into the county or when they try to smuggle it in.

TIP: just declare your goods on the form (everyone who enters the country has to fill one of those in). They’re going to check these goods and usually, you get to take it with you anyway (stuff like candy and strong liquor). Nothing is going to happen to you.

In some cases, customs will have some issues with you bringing electronics with you. It’s not that you’re not allowed to bring it, for them it’s just hard to see exactly what it is on the scan. Make sure to put all your electronics (if necessary in a different bag) at the top of your suitcase. This way, if they ask you to take it out, you don’t have to go and unpack everything.

What does your packing list look like? And what to put in your hand luggage? Read it here.
