Building a bed into your car

Have you actually bought a car? Perfect, then you might just save yourself loads of ´sleeping money´ with a built-in bed! Useful cars for this are station wagons and 4WD’s. You can also simply pass the night on the front seats but you will not endure doing that for weeks.

The materials (wood and screws) are available at hardware stores like Bunnings and Home Hardware store. Here below a 3-step-plan for the installation of a bed in your car:

Step 1:

Fold the back seat of the car downwards and make 4 or 6 ‘pillars’ on an equal height as the down folded back seat. Place the ‘pillars’ in the trunk and screw them onto your wooden board making some sort of table. In order to know the right dimension of the board, you should upward your back seat again. This board does not need to fit exactly the shape of the car but do this as good as you can. If possible, take into account the height of some storage crates* you might have or your biggest suitcase which you’d like to store below your ‘table’. But remember, whichever crates or suitcase you might have, a horizontal table to sleep well on (at more or less the height of your down folded back seat) is your main priority.

Step 2:

Once you have your table mounted in the trunk, you can downfold the back seat again and put another wooden board on it. This second wooden board is supported not by legs but by the down folded back seat itself. It will be held in its place by shifting the front seats backwards, pushing the wooden board against the ‘table’.

Step 3:

When the two boards fit nicely and are on equal height, you can spread your inflatable matress and blow it up with an electrical air pump attached onto your cigarette lighter. No need to keep the engine running for this. The battery of the car should normally be very well able for such a small job. (such as recharging your mobile phone battery) See also; Sleeping in your car.

You will have enough storage room during the day with a free back seat and at night you can place all your stuff on the front seats or in one of those small tents that pitches itself.

It has to be said all cars are different which may result in a different mounting of your bed. Therefore, your own creativity will be necessary during construction.
