Saving money in Australia

Saving money in Australia

There are many ways to save money while travelling Australia.

In the menuw on the left there are many ways listed. Have a further view for more tips!

Discount coupon (Hostels/busses etc)

1.VIPbackpackers: gives you discounts on stuff like hostel and greyhound bus tickets.

2. YHA: gives you discounts on stuff like hostels and bus tickets.

3. NOMAD: gives you discounts on stuff like hostels and bus tickets.

4. ISIC: gives you discounts on stuff like hostels, plane tickets, bus.

5. (Dutch)Student ID (if you have one) often also gives discounts to places like the zoo, a swimming pool, museums and the cinema etc.

VIP backpackers and YHA give you almost the same discounts. YHA hostels are a bit cleaner (in general) but the VIP hostels are cozier.

NOMAD and ISIC are starters that’s why they don’t have a lot of hostels/organization lined up yet.

Owning one of these discounts cards is recommended. You DON’T need two. All you have to do is select a hostel, bus or excursion that goes with your card.

Planning on sleeping in hostels a lot? Taking lots of busses? Or even planning on flying? Then these cards are highly recommended. In some cases, you can get up to a 15% discount on the bus or a 10% discount on a night at a hostel! Getting on of these cards is fairly simple, just walk into a travel/touring agency. Or just ask the hostel you’re staying at on your first night.

Bonus card supermarkets

The biggest supermarkets have (just like with us the Albert Heijn) bonus cards with which you can save for a discount on fuel (for selected gas stations) and this card can function as a bonus card for extra discounts on the goods you buy. You can ask for these cards in the supermarket by the cash register. You don’t even have to fill an address in, that’s only for if people find it. That way it can rightfully be returned to you. Ask for this card and get the discounts!

Others ways of getting discounts (asking)

Tours/trips

Australia has lots of tiny travel/tour agencies. In most cases, they’re near each other or all in the same street. When you want to save money, you can go to the different agencies and see who offers the lowest price.

Here’s how to do it:

1.Walk into a random travel/tour agency.

2.Ask the price for a certain tour.

3.Ask if they have any discounts.

4.Let them write the price on one of their flyers.

5.Say you’ll think about it.

6.Walk into the next travel/tour agency.

7.Show them the flyer (with the price written on it) from your last travel/tour agency.

8.Ask if they can offer the same thing to you for less.

9.Did they say yes? Let them write the amount on the same flyer.

10.Say you’ll think about it.

11.Walk into the next travel/tour agency.

12.Continue doing this until you went to all of the travel/tour agencies.

When you’ve done all of these steps you’ll get the final price. Travel/tour agencies add a lot to the price, so usually you can knock a lot off of the price by just asking for a discount.

Deals

Travel/tour agencies usually have lots of good deals with really high discounts. Every city/village there’s an agency that offers (local) ‘things to do’ and ‘things to see’. Just walk in and ask about these deals and tours. Tell them it has to be as cheap as possible, this is usually the key for the discount they’ll give you after that!
